A lot of fads have come and gone when it comes to dieting and healthy eating. But a lot of people do not realize that dieting and weight loss is not something to be done when you just want those extra pounds shed off your waist or your arms. For a lot of people, it is a healthy lifestyle. And everyone who wants to lose the pounds – for good – should remember this as well.

Food Combining

Food combining for weight loss can be a good plan for anybody who wants to lose weight without scrimping on the nutrition food can give. The idea of food combining or food pairing for weight loss is that certain foods can be more beneficial to the body when they are combined with certain foods also. A lot of foods today are processed, meaning certain chemicals are put to preserve them. These chemicals can do harm to our body. Moreover, the digestive system works overtime digesting our foods that all our energy goes into it, and we become sluggish and tired. And because you think you are tired, you go out and eat some more processed foods, which is not good. By combining foods in a certain way, you get all the energy and the nutrition they can give you. This also means combining foods promote weight loss, and you can keep off those pounds permanently. All you need is to follow 3 basic rules and you are on your way to food combining for weight loss. First thing you need to remember is that fruits can only be eaten alone. We have always been taught to eat fruits at the end every meal as desserts because fruits are rich in vitamins. But if you combine them with other food, you won’t absorb all their nutrition as the intestine is still busy digesting the other food. Fruits are generally easy to digest, and by eating them on their own, you absorb all their nutrition and the good calories it releases. That also means you will feel less hungry. Next thing to food pairing for weight loss is the protein-non-starchy veggies duo. Meat and starchy vegetables – like potatoes and corn – both secrete different kinds of chemicals to break them down during digestion. If you combine protein and starch, the chemicals will neutralize each other and won’t help digestion. No wonder you get gassy and constipated after eating meat and potatoes. Because non-starchy veggies – pick from any of the leafy greens – are rich in protein and other nutrients, they complement meat very well during digestion. So sacrifice those potatoes and eat them later if you’re planning to have that steak for dinner. Last thing to remember in food combining for weight loss is grains, starchy and non-starchy veggies go very well together. They are all very rich in fiber, which means they are harder to digest and stays in the body longer, and you won’t feel hungry right away. This also means these foods promote weight loss because you’re less likely to grab a candy bar if you feel full. Eating grains and veggies together will also clean your digestive tract, getting rid of toxins that can cause some colon diseases. When it comes to food combining for weight loss, you can experiment all you want as long as you stick to the guidelines. Not only will you lose a lot of weight by eating right, you will also detoxify your body and get rid of the dirt inside you. So start feeling great inside and out through food combining.

What is Fiber?
Fiber is made up of the indigestible parts of plants which pass through the stomach and intestines. Its main role is to keep the digestive system healthy. Fiber is a carbohydrate and can help to stabilise glucose and cholesterol levels.

Rich Fibre

Not enough high fiber food in your diet may result in you getting one of the following disorders:
Constipation; this is a difficulty in passing hard faeces and in some cases can be extremely painful. In later stages of constipation, the abdomen may become distended and tender.
Irritable bowel syndrome; you may experience some pain, flatulence and bloating of the abdomen.
Diverticulitis; these are small hernias of the digestive tract.
Heart disease, a narrowing of the arteries caused by high cholesterol
Colorectal cancer also called colon or bowel cancer; includes cancerous growths in the colon and rectum.
Haemorrhoids, also commonly known as piles; are varicose veins or swelling and inflammation of the rectum and anus.
It is also worth mentioning that the digestive system slows down with age so a high fiber diet is more important for older people.
Insoluble Fiber
Insoluble fiber can be found in a variety of foods; vegetables such as carrot, celery, green beans, cauliflower and potato skins, whole grain foods, bran, nuts and seeds, and the skins of some fruit (including tomatoes)
Their major role is to bulk faeces and prevent constipation and associated problems. It provides bulk to the diet and speeds everything through the bowel and may help to prevent bowel cancer.
Soluble Fiber
Soluble fiber can be found in fruits such as apples, bananas and berries, vegetables such as broccoli, carrots, potatoes and yams, peas and beans, oats, rye and barley.
Soluble fiber also lowers cholesterol levels and helps to prevent heart disease. It can also help to prevent constipation.
Resistant Starch
This is found in many foods like grains, firm bananas, lentils and potatoes. It helps to improve bowel health.
How Much Do You Need?
Opinion varies around the world, the recommended dietary allowance (RDA) ranges from 12 to 30 grams per day for adults. Children should eat 10 grams plus 1 gram per year of their age. For example, a 4 year old should eat 14 grams per day.
Tips To Help Boost Your Intake:-
*Change to wholemeal or wholegrain breads or rolls; these contain all 3 parts of the grain.
*Eat breakfast cereals which are wholegrain or contain wheat, bran or oats.
*Eat wholemeal pasta and brown rice.
*Eat fresh fruit rather than drinking fruit juice because fruit juice is often sweetened and contains artificial colors and flavors but fresh fruit has natural sugars and is full of essential vitamins and minerals.
*Add beans, barley and lentils into your soups and casseroles.
*Eat a variety of fruit and vegetables. They are low in fat, salt and sugar and a good source of dietary fiber.
*Make sure that you drink lots of fluid to enable your body to digest the fiber.
Fiber can help in weight loss because foods high in fiber are often bulky and more filling. Therefore, you will get fuller quicker and will not eat as much.
Fiber slows glucose absorption from the small intestine into the blood and therefore reduces the possibility of a surge of insulin.
Although fiber is an important factor in your diet, it is also important to gradually increase your fiber intake, a sudden increase could cause increased flatulence and abdominal pains.
Always remember to contact your Family Practitioner, Dietician or Child Health Nurse for further advice before making any changes to your diet and health program.

A lot of talk has been held about this manner of eating that some people know of as the popular “Hay Diet” or other similar names. Brought about in 1911 by a New York Physician, Dr. William Hay came up with the idea of Proper Food Combining as an alternative way of curing himself from his medical condition (Bright’s Disease). He ended up not just curing himself, but coming up with an amazing discovery in treating disease and preventing illness from recurring. Not to mention high energy for every day living. Still, some myths abound on the concept of proper food combining that need to be given correction. 1. The concept of proper food combining generally deals with food tastes and how a certain type of food interacts with other types of foods. Though taste is an appealing factor when it comes to eating (or should I say, indulging), it has nothing to do with correctly combining one’s meals. Proper food combining mainly focuses on how different foods are digested by the human body. As such, some foods require an acid digestive enzyme, while others need an alkaline environment. 2. Pork and other “unhealthy” foods are not part of any properly combined meals. While half of that statement may be true, it still is incorrect as far as proper food combining is concerned. Maybe because of health or religious reasons, people would tend to shy or shun pork away and that should be well understood and respected. However, you can combine pork with other foods and still experience painless digestion! Non-starchy vegetables such as brussels sprouts, cauliflower, and spinach are good examples. There are many more. 3. The obviously renowned “American Diet” consists of some foods that are improperly combined, but should not be of great concern. I’m assuming this statement was made by someone who’s always in a hurry, doesn’t have the time to prepare his meals and always ends up in a fast food chain. The American diet has given us great reason to be alarmed as our common every day meals are fast becoming a far cry from what our body actually needs to survive and thrive. Think back at your last 3 meals and chances are (especially if you are always in a rush), they are all mis-combined. Chicken and rice? Hamburger and fries? Spaghetti and meatballs? You got it. They’re a tempting treat I know, but at the expense of your health in the long term? You gotta think twice. Proper Food Combining is key in curing most, if not all Digestive Disorders, which incidentally, are the #1 reason people visit their doctors today.

The author suffered immensely and intensely from GERD (Acid Reflux), and thought he was either going to die young because of it, or live to be 100 (as his doctor assuredly told him) but be miserable and in pain the rest of his life – until that breakthrough moment in his life, when he found that there is a better and natural way to cure his condition.

Discover 9 Key Colors to Your Best Food Choices Part 1.

How to Apply Color Therapy for Optimal Health

Did you know color therapy is the radiant reflection of luminous energy in various wavelengths, with the power to affect both the body and the soul. Color therapy, or the conscious implementation of color to encourage well-being and healing, has been used in schools, hospitals, workplaces, and other institutions for decades. Science has shown that blood pressure, pulse, and respiratory rate are decreased by exposure to cool colors, such as green, blue, and black, and increased by warm colors, such as red, orange, and yellow.

For optimal health, eat foods in a wide range of colors. Your meals should be riotous rainbow of color, rather than a bland palette of whites or browns. Celebrate life, health, fitness, and even food choices by celebrating color!

Red

Red, the most physical and sensual of the colors, vibrates the most slowly and has the longest wavelength in the visible spectrum. Red is stimulating, hot, and exciting; it is associated with vitality, strength, passion, and willpower.

Red Foods

Beets Cayenne Cherries Cranberries Dulse Kidney Beans Radishes Raspberries Red Apples Red Peppers Red Cabbages Watermelon Strawberries Tomatoes Red plums

These are some of the red foods for you and there’s a whole lot more!

Orange

Orange is the blending of red (physical action) with yellow (wisdom). It symbolizes enthusiasm, outgoingness, optimism, confidence, joyfulness, and courage.

Beware fast-food restaurants use orange to attract lots of people without encouraging them to linger.

Orange Foods

Almonds Apricots Cantaloupe Carrots Cumin Dates Ginger Mangoes Nectarines Oranges Papayas Paprika Peaches Sweet Potatoes Walnuts Pumpkins Tangerines

Orange can lift spirits, foster humor, and loosen repression. Try it!

Yellow

Yellow is warm and is associated with things sunny, cheerful, joyous, optimistic, practical, confident, and illuminating. It is also associated with wisdom, knowledge, logic, and the mind. Now I know why I chose yellow as one of my main colors for Fitness Elements (Wisdom).

Because yellow is such a sharpening color that it enhances alertness, concentration, communication, and focus, you will often find yellow on food packaging.

Bananas Corn Dill Anise Seeds Cinnamon Chamomile Golden Apples Grapefruit Honey Lemons Lemongrass Nuts Pineapple Vegetable oils Yams Yellow Peppers Yellow Squash Whole grains

I hope you enjoy part 1 of the color therapy for optimal health and try to apply these colors to your fun food choices. See you next week for part 2. Have a healthy and happy day!

FOOD ALLERGY: AN OVERVIEW

MEENAKSHI BHARKATIYA*, KAMAL SINGH RATHORE, ANKUR MAHESHWARI, SUNITA PANCHAWAT, R.K.NEMA

B.N.GIRLS? COLLEGE OF PHARMACY, UDAIPUR-RAJ. 31002

INTRODUCTION

Food allergy is recognized as a common worldwide problem, and, like other atopic disorders, its incidence seems to increase. In the past years, investigations of allergic food proteins and related immunological responses have moved to the molecular level, and the newly-found knowledge might provide novel experimental strategies for the laboratory diagnosis and the immuno-modulatory control of food-induced allergic reactions (1, 2).

Approximately 20% of the population alters their diet for a perceived adverse reaction to food, but the application of double-blind placebo-controlled oral food challenge, the ?gold standard? for diagnosis of food allergy, shows that questionnaire-based studies overestimate the prevalence of food allergies. The clinical disorders determined by adverse reactions to food can be classified on the basis of immunologic or no immunologic mechanisms and the organ system or systems affected (3, 4, 5).

The true prevalence of food allergy is lower and seems to range from 1% to 4% of the general population and about 6% of the general population and about 6% of the paediatric population, but does occur in as much as 25% of children with eczema6. Allergic hypersensitivity simply put, is an adverse immune reaction to a protein (or allergen) in our environment, which is normally harmless to the non-allergic person. It may present as mild itching of the skin, tissue swelling and wheezing or even progress to full-blown anaphylaxis and death. 18 million allergy sufferers live in the UK where 4% of the populations also have a food allergy.

Allergy develops after repeated exposure to the causative allergen. Sensitization takes place on initial exposure (a process that may take up to six weeks to develop) and no adverse reaction appears to occur during initial sensitization (6).

(A) DEFINITION

A food allergy is an immunologic response to a food protein and caused by allergens in the food that are a kind of protein in the food. These proteins resist the cooking process, the acid in the stomach and the enzymes in the stomach and intestines and enter the blood stream and they cause the allergy reaction after they enter the blood stream.

(B) SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

Symptoms of food allergies are: -

1. Anaphylaxis: – a severe, whole-body allergic reaction that can result in death. Leads to vasodilation and, if severe, symptoms of life-threatening shock.

2. Angioedema: – rapid swelling (edema) of the skin, mucosa and submucosal tissues, especially of the eyelids, face, lips, and tongue.

3. Eczema is a form of dermatitis, or inflammation of the upper layers of the skin.

(a). Atopic eczema (aka infantile e., flexural e., atopic dermatitis) is believed to have a hereditary component, and often runs in families whose members also have hay fever and asthma. Itchy rash is particularly noticeable on face and scalp, neck, inside of elbows, behind knees, and buttocks.

(b). Contact dermatitis is of two types: allergic (resulting from a delayed reaction to some allergen, such as poison ivy or nickel), and irritant (resulting from direct reaction to a solvent, for example). Some substances act both as allergen and irritant (e.g. wet cement). Other substances cause a problem after sunlight exposure, bringing on phototoxic dermatitis.

(c). Xerotic eczema (aka asteatotic e., e. craquele or craquelatum, winter itch, pruritus hiemalis) is dry skin that becomes so serious it turns into eczema. It worsens in dry winter weather, and limbs and trunk are most often affected. The itchy, tender skin resembles a dry, cracked, river bed. This disorder is very common among the older population.

(d). Seborrhoeic dermatitis (aka cradle cap in infants, dandruff) causes dry or greasy scaling of the scalp and eyebrows. Scaly pimples and red patches sometimes appear in various adjacent places. In newborns it causes a thick, yellow crusty scalp rash called cradle cap which seems related to lack of biotin, and is often curable.

4. Skin rashes, such as nettle rash (also called urticaria or hives). Some of these longer lasting rashes are called atopic dermatitis.
